More Information
We do not have a lot of DIY Plans for home projects, but we do have some important ones - for times when so many things in turmoil. We never know what is going to happen, but it is not worth living in fear of the What-If.
In this case, having some food and water storage makes a lot of sense - especially if it is passive and easy to keep fresh and ready.
The big problem with home storage - or should I say - the solution to the big problem with home storage - is keeping the things you use all the time, then keeping them rotated or easy to cycle. The two home projects for storage above are all about convenience.
- First, the Wall of Cans is a FIFO - First In, First Out can storage. It is tall, fits against a wall so it is out of the way, and makes a great place to store things like canned fruit (all your favorite varieties), soups, and canned vegetables. If you have pets that use canned food, they fit too. This system is perfect, because you can keep a few months worth of the things you normally eat. Then, if there is some crazy event - like a snow storm or trucking strike - you are all ready for it. No stress. Your food is all there and you can live just fine until things settle down. One more big benefit - you buy in bulk, which makes all the food cheaper.
- Second, is the Water Barrel Storage. Of course, a lot of people store water in barrels. BUT, not a lot of people have them set up so that if you need it, you just turn on the tap and get the water! It is such a beautiful system. The whole thing drains by itself, then you fill both barrels with one hose.
Just A Quick Story . . .
The water main feeding the street to our house broke one year. That meant no water to the houses on our street. The neighbors were all going to the store to buy water, or visiting friends a few blocks over to get water. For us, we had 110 gallons ready to go. Seriously easy. In a couple days when the city water was restored, we just filled the barrels back up.
