Description
Builders and haulers who want the advantages of a gooseneck in a mid weight trailer, can get plans here. This 13,000 lb gooseneck deck-over trailer fills the practical middle ground – in both deck length and capacity.
This trailer benefits from the stability and load sharing of a gooseneck, yet it is light enough to be efficient for everyday use. Perfect if you are more interested in function than chasing the highest rating.
13,000 lb Gooseneck Deck-Over Trailer – Design Overview
A full flat deck keeps usable space clear of the tires for easy loading of equipment, materials, or pallets. Coupled with the gooseneck, it allows more freedom for loading and weight distribution.
As you can see in the images, this is a tandem axle, gooseneck deck-over trailer. Axle capacity is 12,000 lbs. from two 6000 lb. axles. With a gooseneck tongue weight of 20% to 25%, the total trailer capacity is 13,000 lbs. See full specifications in the tab below.
In all Mechanical Elements designs, we give attention to stress throughout the frame, so this trailer is tough by design. The engineering includes the gooseneck gussets which reduce stress, and at the same time, are both lighter and stronger. The analysis considers how the trailer reacts in braking and cornering, as it carries your things to your places. Here is an article about the engineering in this gooseneck deck-over trailer.

Finally, with all our plans we give choices in the trailer build. Choose your deck style, various sides (or not), ramps, rub rails, jack styles, tie-down locations, and much more. Even the options have options – like choices for ramp length and strength. We do the frame design and engineering, then you can build it with options for the way you want it.

More About The Design Features
More About The Design Features
While the specifications are nice, here is little more information about the trailer features.
- * The trailer is 8 feet 6 inches wide (typical legal width limit). 8’6″ width includes the rub rails.
- * The trailer deck bed length is 20 feet, 3.6 inches including the steel frame.
- Overall length with the tongue is 29 feet, 2.6 inches – which can vary a little with some choices.
- Trailer deck height will depend on choices. Typical is ~35 inches, but will vary with tire size, spring shape, shims, load and other options.
- 12,000 lbs axle capacity (combined axle rating)* using tandem axles rated at 6000 lbs each.
- Total trailer capacity is 13,000 lbs which includes the trailer weight with all options and the full max load. This include 20% to 25% tongue weight (2600 lbs to 3200 lbs tongue weight).
- The suspension shown is leaf springs, double eye style, with equalizer; Slipper type springs are also acceptable. This trailer is not designed for independent torsion axles (see this article).
- Trailer weight will vary depending on the options you choose. Weights for the trailer in the specifications tab (above) are estimates only. The materials you choose along with the options you choose, will set the weight for your trailer.
- Many options are in the plans. Here is a list, yet it does not include everything.
- Deck options – materials, connection options, with or without the wheel covers, etc.. The gooseneck mini deck is also an option.
- Build the standard flatbed, or choose one of the sides options – permanent or removable – shown in the plans. Sides options have variations, including options for tie-downs, rub rails, stake pockets, etc..
- Ramps are an option – Choose ramps that slide in (and store) under the deck (or not), then choose the ramp length and capacity you need. Engineering data for strength based length is included.
- Choose a mounted toolbox, an upper mini-deck, spare tire (and location), etc.. These are for optional functionality. Since some options are mutually exclusive, not all options are in the pictures on this page.

Various options of our Deck-Over Trailers. A Bumper-Pull version is shown here, but the options are similar for the Gooseneck design. The trailer plans include many options you will not find in other blueprints. - The download package includes the full set of drawings along with illustrated instructions and CAD files for laser or water jet cutting of the tail plate, the gooseneck gussets, and other option parts.
- We provide the plans complete, the way we would want to receive them. We think they are much more complete and more detailed than any of our competitors.
