Description
When you need a Heavy Duty Equipment Hauling Trailer, this is the place to start. Plans start with Full Engineering to make this trailer perform. I-Beam construction for strength while keeping the trailer deck low. (I-Beams provide maximum strength for the weight.)
A ton of study went into this and our other Equipment Trailer designs before even starting the drawings. Then all the engineering to make sure the design will do the job. We want your equipment to travel safe. For more about the design, see this article about the trailer design.
What Is In The Equipment Trailer Plans?
It is not just the strength and stability we engineer into the plans. There are a bunch of useful features we provide so you can choose, and build the trailer you really want. Things like slide out ramps that store under the deck, removable fenders, several deck styles, and options for tie-down points. Add a winch – removable or permanent, options for jacks, a toolbox, and more.
Plans also include the option to build for 14,000 lbs. or 16,000 lbs. total trailer capacity. Some material changes are required for the higher capacity, but all the necessary differences are are in the plans.
If you want a 20′, fixed deck, equipment trailer, start here. These plans have full shop drawings and step-by-step instructions. Plans include a section of ‘Engineering Considerations’ to help make feature decisions. At Mechanical Elements we do the engineering, and show the options, then you can build the trailer you need.
See the images above, then read specifications in the tabs below. Good luck with your project!

6’10” x 20′ – 14,000 lbs / 16,000 lbs – Equipment Trailer Plans
Size, Weight, and Performance Specifications here are for reference only. Your choices with all the options will affect these numbers.
- Tandem axles with leaf springs — use double eye or slipper style.
- 7′ x 20′ nominal deck size. Actual deck width is 6 feet 10 inches, and length is 20 feet 3.5 inches.
- Outside width at the fenders is 102 inches (at the legal limit of 8′ 6″).
- Fenders are Removable. Or, weld them on, or bolt them down. All these are options.
- Overall length including the tongue is 25 feet, 5 inches.
- Trailer deck height depends on choices when building, but will range from 22″ up. (Bed height shown is ~23″ using axles with a 4″ drop.)
- I-Beam construction gives max strength for the weight.
- Several options for the Deck: Choose Plywood, Planks, Split Deck, or Metal. All in the plans.
- Frame construction is welded steel — I-Beam and C-Channel primarily.
- Max trailer capacity is an option. Choose to build it for 14,0000 lbs capacity, or at 16,000 lbs – (combined tandem axle rating)* which includes the trailer and everything on it.
- Trailer weight depends on options you choose. The 14K base trailer is ~2200+ lbs. Add a wood deck, ramps, tie-downs and some typical options, then the trailer will likely weigh around 3000 lbs. The options you choose may add more or less weight.
- Ramp design is given, as well as a slide away to store them under the deck.
- Ramps include several options for Length, Width, Capacity, and Material. We give you the engineering, then you choose the size and strength you want.
- Many options are given for tie-down anchors. Choose what you want, and place them where you like.
- Choose a front rail, or not. Make it short or tall.
- Mount a winch – an option – to make it removable or solid mount.
- A tongue mounted toolbox is also an option.
- And, there are options for a tongue jack, and for rear supports.
- The download files include 41 pages of drawings, plus 29 pages of detailed instructions, materials lists, parts lists, explanations, and Engineering Considerations.

Notes for Success
* Trailer load capacity depends on all the parts and materials, as well as the craftsmanship in building. All Mechanical Elements trailers are engineered to perform as stated when built as defined with proper care in construction – including parts, material, construction techniques, weld integrity, assembly methods, and finishing. Capacity for this trailer also requires proper choices for parts such as the hitch, axle(s), wheels, tires, safety chain, decking, bolts, pins, etc. Please make sure component load capacities match or exceed the trailer total capacity. Do not exceed manufacturers limits.
For trouble-free trailer life, think care and safety. Please select fastening methods to handle how and where the trailer will operate – including vibration, proper fastener types, bolt grades, torques, and nut types (like lock nuts). Then, be smart about loading the trailer, load distribution, tire pressure, tire condition and the mechanics of towing. We want you safe to enjoy your trailer for a long time ahead. Always use proper safety and securing equipment when loading and towing a trailer.
Thank You — The Mechanical Elements Team
