Description
Description
These plans are all about building a heavy duty trailer with the features you want. At the high end, this is a 12 ft 7K Trailer, but you choose the actual features and trailer capacity – 5.2K, 6K, or 7K – single axle. Leaf springs or Torsion Conversion (sold separate). Plans show the material differences for the various axle capacity choices.
Then there are features and options to choose. Pick Sides (of various styles) – or not – because this trailer is super strong as a flat bed if that is what you like. Choose a rear Tailgate? Various Deck styles? Ramps? (Or not.) Many Tie-Downs options, and so much more. All in the Plans.
Best of all, you can build with confidence because these plans have Full Engineering – by Synthesis. (Like all our plans.)
Some of the many options are in this image. While short sides like these are an option, the sides are not needed for strength. These 6’10” wide x 12 ft 7K Trailer Plans have a strong frame. We did the engineering, so you can make the feature choices you want.
Build the trailer better, and stronger! Because, you can’t buy a trailer like this off a sales lot.
See below for Alternate Sizes & Conversions (like a Torsion Axle.)
Specifications
Specifications
Details of the specifications will change with the features and options you choose. The plans show many options that will change Weight, Deck height, and the obvious differences in Total Load Capacity. The specifications below are for general reference only.
Full Engineering Analysis is complete for All Trailers at Mechanical Elements. This is just one example of the engineering analysis that goes into the design.
6′10″ x 12 ft – 6K / 7K – HD Trailer Plans
- Complete Engineering for this 6’10” wide x 12′ long Trailer Design.
- * These trailer plans have a deck size at 6-ft 10-inches wide, and 12-ft 3.5-inches long. (This is max legal width at the wheels, and it allows a true 12 ft load, even with a tailgate or sides.)
- Trailer length, including the tongue, is 198 inches or so depending on choices and options.
- Total width is near 102 inches (8.5 ft). Actual width depends on component choices like axles, tires, fenders.
- Deck height depends on components – 22.5 inches height is shown in the drawings.)
- Single axle, leaf spring design.
- Options for Max load capacity – at 5200 lbs.* or 6000 lbs.* or 7000 lbs.* – includes the weight of the trailer.
- Welded steel trailer frame for strength and robustness.
- Again, options will change trailer weight. The 5.2K flatbed weighs a lot less than the 12 ft 7K trailer. Other versions and feature choices change the weight. As a gross estimate based on the 6K flatbed version is approximately 1000 lbs. Options like decking choice, sides (or not), tailgate or toolbox, etc. will increase weight.
- Plans include multiple options for sides and for different trailer deck materials.
- Plans include a fold-down tailgate / ramp option.
- Try the hidden, removable, slide under the deck ramp option.
- Add tie-down locations, with options given, or choices as you like.
- Buy the Trailer Plans, then Download the Drawings and Instructions (one .ZIP file) right after purchase. Start your 12 ft 7K trailer build today.

We encourage options and customization to meet your exact needs. To assist with that, these 6 x 12 ft 7K Trailer Plans include many ideas for special uses – carrying rocks, to trash hauling, or a small tractor, and landscape goods features. Feel free to add features of your own too.

Notes for Success
* Trailer load capacity depends on all the parts and materials, as well as the craftsmanship in building. All Mechanical Elements trailers are engineered to perform as stated when built as defined with proper care in construction – including parts, material, construction techniques, weld integrity, assembly methods, and finishing. Capacity for this trailer also requires proper choices for parts such as the hitch, axle(s), wheels, tires, safety chain, decking, bolts, pins, etc. Please make sure component load capacities match or exceed the trailer total capacity. Do not exceed manufacturers limits.
For trouble-free trailer life, think care and safety. Please select fastening methods to handle how and where the trailer will operate – including vibration, proper fastener types, bolt grades, torques, and nut types (like lock nuts). Then, be smart about loading the trailer, load distribution, tire pressure, tire condition and the mechanics of towing. We want you safe to enjoy your trailer for a long time ahead. Always use proper safety and securing equipment when loading and towing a trailer.
Thank You — The Mechanical Elements Team
