Description

This is a heavy duty trailer.  At 14K or 16K by 20′ deck length, this deck-over trailer is a workhorse.  The plans are fully engineered and ready to build.  Like all our other Deck-Over trailers, these blueprints have several options and extra features you won’t find with our competitors.  The frame is engineered with structural steel – option for 14,000 lbs or 16,000 lbs – then you choose the rest.

Choose options like ramps, hitch, deck material, sides, and more.  Also, the options have options – like choices for ramp length and strength.  Build it the way you want it.  This trailer is tough by design, with the engineering to back it up.

Tandem Axle, 14K or 16K at 20′ Flat Deck

When you need a really beefy deck-over trailer, there’s not much else to substitute.  The trailer deck is 8′ 6″ wide by 20′ long with tandem axles to give 14K or 16K lbs capacity.  Yet, it’s not just beef, there’s a lot of finesse beyond base trailer.  Plans include options, and options in the options.  Need ramps just a little longer or a little stronger?  The plans give options for ramp length and strength, so you can find your sweet spot.

Choices let you build it the way you want it.  We engineer it for robust action, then you build it and enjoy it.  In researching other deck-over trailers we found many niggly things some owners would change.  That brings us to add options, then you can make the decisions.  Since it’s from Mechanical Elements, these are things to expect.

8.5′ x 20′ – 14/16,000 lbs Deck-Over Trailer Plans

• 16K max at 8’6″ x 20′ nominal deck size.
• Option for 14,000 lbs axle capacity or 16,000 lbs capacity (including the trailer and the payload).
• Tandem axles with slipper style leaf springs.
• Of course, it’s a Deck-over design, having a full 20′ flat deck.
• Welded Steel Construction has rectangular tube main beams for max torsional stability, then channel, angle and flat in other areas.
• Approximate base trailer weight ~ 3000 lbs (w/o Ramps, Decking, or Sides).  Options and variations will increase weight.
• While the main design is a traditional Deck-Over trailer, plans also include many options.

• Instructions explain the build, step by step, with hints to customize for any specific needs.
• The download is a Zip file with full drawings, instructions, extra illustrations, and special part files.  Just save them to your computer.

More About The Design Features

Here is a little more information to expound on the trailer feature specifications. This is the 16K by 20′ length deck.

• * The trailer is 8′ 6″ wide (typical legal limit), with a 20′ 3.5″ bed length (including the frame).  8′ 6″ width includes the rub rails.
• Overall length with the tongue is 302″ (a little over 25 feet) — will vary with some options.
• Trailer bed height depends on options.  Typical is ~35″ to 36″, but varies with tire size, spring shape, shims, load, etc..
• Option for 14K or 16K (16,000 lbs) max capacity (combined axle rating)* using tandem axles — rated at 7000 lbs or 8000 lbs each.  Load capacity includes the trailer weight with all options, and the load.
• Of course, the suspension is heavy leaf springs, slipper style, with equalizer.  Not made for independent torsion axles (see this article).
• Trailer weight depends on options.  The base trailer plus decking choice, sides, ramps, accessories, etc..
• Plans have many options.  Here is a partial list.
• Deck options — material, connection options, with or without the wheel covers, etc..
• Build the standard flatbed, or choose sides — permanent or removable.  And, sides options have options like tie-downs, rub rails, stake pockets, etc..
• Ramps are an option — Choose ramps that slide in (and store) under the deck (or not), then choose ramp length and capacity.  The engineering is there to help you choose.
• Design has options for a raised front rail (or not), and a tongue tray for special tools (or not).
• Choose a mounted toolbox, spare tire, etc. for functionality.  Since some options are mutually exclusive, not all are in the pictures here.

  

• Blueprints include the full set of drawings, illustrated instructions, plus CAD files for laser or water jet cutting the tail plate and special parts.
• We give plans the way we would want to receive them.  Complete, with details and lots of info.  Some you’ll use, some not, but we give you choices.
