Description
Description
A Car Hauler with Drive-Over Fenders trailer plans – 18.5 ft length. While this trailer is similar in length, strength, and capacity to our other 12K Car Hauler, the increased width and drive-over fenders feature make it very different. Yes, the deck is wider, 8.5′, with permanent, strong fenders so that wide stance vehicles can drive up and right over the fenders.
Like our other car haulers, this 12,000 lbs trailer includes a robust I-Beam design for great frame strength while keeping the deck height low. The 10,400 lbs option (with smaller tires) will reduce deck height even more.
Please Note: The fender design of this trailer is for axles with a 4″ drop. We do have another version of these drive-over fender trailer plans with a design for Straight Axles for more ground clearance.
Drive-Over Fender Trailer Plans
This trailer will carry wide stance vehicles like built jeeps, 4×4’s, dually trucks, wide tractors, and more. These drive-over trailer plans are a complete design, with full engineering so the trailer performs. The fenders are partly cut from sheet steel with tabs and slots so everything aligns for strength and ease. Plans include all the CNC files, with instructions, to build with confidence. Just send the files to a vendor, then go pick up the parts. It is an easy way to build both strong and accurate.
A trailer from these plans will carry your car, truck, tractor, Jeep, side-by-side, or equipment, and more. Read more in this article about Car Haulers with Drive Over Fenders.
Options
Car Trailers have so many different needs, so one simple trailer plan won’t do it all. These plans include many options so you can build it to meet your needs. Things like slide out ramps, deck choices, a removable winch, and various tie points. While some are in the images, many are not visible. Choose 12,000 lb capacity or 10,400 lb based on Dexter Axle products. Read more in the specifications tab below.
If you need a fixed deck, Car / Equipment / ORV Transport Trailer with Drive-Over Fenders, these plans are a solid place to start.

- Option for 12,000 lbs. Capacity, or 10,400 lbs. Capacity.
- 8’6″ x 18.5′ nominal deck size. (Actual size is a little longer.) Width includes the drive-over fenders.
- * A car trailer from these plans has a bed width of 8′ 6′ and bed length of 18′ 7″.
- Overall length including the tongue is around 24 feet.
- While bed height depends on various choices: Around 23″ for the 12,000 lb. option, or 21″ for the 10,400 lb. option. Other things will also affect this height.
- Max capacity is 12,000 lbs — (combined axle rating)* which includes both the trailer and the payload. (For the 10,400 lbs option, that is the max capacity.)
- Trailer weight depends on many design choices. The 12K base trailer is ~2600+ lbs without the deck. Tie-Down options, Decking choices, Toolbox, Winch, Battery, Ramps, Jack Styles, etc. all add to the weight.
- Tandem axles with leaf springs – use double eye springs, or slipper style.
- I-Beam construction is compact, for a low deck height. Strength is in the I-Beams, which are stronger than C-Channel of similar size, so this trailer will perform better for the long term, and the long haul.
- Frame construction is welded steel, with I-Beams, Angle, Tube, Flat and C-Channel. The right material in the right places for best function. All with Full Engineering!
- Drive-Over Fenders in the trailer plans are made strong and easy to build with a technique of tabs and slots. All Welded for super strength.
- Several Deck styles are included as options. (See the image.) Choose a solid Plywood deck, a plank surface, or a split deck – all in Wood – or build a Full Metal Deck – all with drive-over fenders.
- Instructions in the plans explain how get the parts made quick and accurate. CAD files to get the parts cut out are all included.
- Steel Ramps are also in the design. Choose to make them slide in and store under the trailer, or make them longer to store in another location.
- Many options are given for tie-down anchor points. Use one style or several to meet your needs.
- Plans include options for a front rail, either short or tall, with options for material.
- A winch option is also in the plans. Make it fixed, or removable with a pin.
- Choose a tongue mount toolbox, or a tongue tray, or neither.
- There are options for the tongue jack, as well as options for rear supports.
- Plans include a full set of Drawings (45 pages) plus the Instructions Document (21 pages). It has a materials list that includes both raw materials and components to purchase.
- The Drive-Over Fender Trailer Plans have a lot of options, explanations, Engineering Considerations, and Illustrated Instructions. They are complete.
More About The Design Features
More About The Design Features
The Drive-Over fenders in these trailer plans are one focus, but it is also a great multi-purpose trailer. Use the 12K capacity to haul equipment – like skid loaders, tractors, mini-excavators, and lifts. Or use the Drive-Over fenders to take your built 4×4, or dually truck. Afterall, that is what this trailer is built for.
These plans start with the same solid I-Beam base frame as our other 12K Car Haulers. Also, most of the same trailer options to make it the way you want. Use options in the plans, or add your own, so it fits your needs.

Notes for Success
* Trailer load capacity depends on all the parts and materials, as well as the craftsmanship in building. All Mechanical Elements trailers are engineered to perform as stated when built as defined with proper care in construction – including parts, material, construction techniques, weld integrity, assembly methods, and finishing. Capacity for this trailer also requires proper choices for parts such as the hitch, axle(s), wheels, tires, safety chain, decking, bolts, pins, etc. Please make sure component load capacities match or exceed the trailer total capacity. Do not exceed manufacturers limits.
For trouble-free trailer life, think care and safety. Please select fastening methods to handle how and where the trailer will operate – including vibration, proper fastener types, bolt grades, torques, and nut types (like lock nuts). Then, be smart about loading the trailer, load distribution, tire pressure, tire condition and the mechanics of towing. We want you safe to enjoy your trailer for a long time ahead. Always use proper safety and securing equipment when loading and towing a trailer.
Thank You — The Mechanical Elements Team
