Description
Change our Mechanical Elements HD utility trailer plans from Leaf Springs, to a Torsion Axle. These Conversion Plans show you how.
- This design fits our Single Axle, 6′ and 6’10” Width trailers, at 6000 or 7000 lbs. Select your width.
- They also fit other single axle trailers by modifying the axle width dimension in the drawings.
- We also offer Conversion Plans for our 3500 lb. Single Axle Trailers.
Change to a Torsion Axle. Even our HD trailers can benefit. With these plans, you can build with confidence, because the Conversion Plans have Full Engineering to manage the torsion axle stresses. We did the engineering for you – even showing the torsion axle specification.
Torsion Axles offer better ride quality which is nice, even with our heavy duty 6000 lbs and 7000 lbs utility trailers. Set the neutral angle down for more ground clearance, OR set it up for a lower trailer deck. The choice is yours. And, torsion axles are available in galvanized versions for wet environments.
Now you can change to a Torsion Axle easily, right from the beginning, to build the Torsion Axle Trailer you want.
Change your axle and know the result will be strong. For engineering information, please see the Trailer Axle Comparison article. Leaf Springs and Torsions are different, so the mounting design must change a little for each axle type. Read more about converting axles.

Torsion Axle Trailer Conversion Plans
- These conversion plans show how to change to torsion axle for the above listed trailer plans.
- Includes all the changes for both parts and materials to make the conversion.
- These plans show only the changes, so the trailer plans are also required.
- Single, Torsion Axle design for 6000 lbs and 7000 lbs axle capacities only.
- A torsion axle gives more options for deck height (for more axle ground clearance or for a lower deck).
- The change to torsion axle does not significantly affect the total trailer weight.
- This conversion works with all the normal trailer plans options EXCEPT storing the ramp under the trailer bed. All other options work.
- Last page of the drawings shows all the Torsion Axle ordering information. Just send this sheet to your axle provider.
- Plans include complete Drawings and illustrated Instructions — all the info needed to change to a torsion axle.
More About The Change To Torsion Axle
More About The Change To Torsion Axle
These Conversion Plans go hand in hand with the main trailer plans. We could create a bunch of duplicate plans – Torsion Axle Trailer plans – but giving a long list seems awkward for you. These conversion plans solve the problem by allowing you to choose the trailer you need, then make the conversion you want.
We recommend looking through the axle conversion plans along with the trailer plans to see the material changes. It is just a few things, and the obvious axle change. These conversion plans show the differences, so you can confidently make the axle change knowing the engineering is all done for you.
All of the options shown in the main trailer plans also work with this conversion, EXCEPT the option for a ramp that slides in, and stores under the trailer. All other options, like sides or tailgate, a tongue mounted toolbox, tie-down bars, and more will work fine with the change to a torsion axle.
Use these plans to make the torsion axle trailer, then customize your new trailer and make it perfect for you.
Single Axle – Torsion Conversion
- The change to torsion axle does not change the size of the trailer. Choose your trailer, then choose the matching conversions plans width to make the conversion.
- Overall trailer length does not change. Overall width can be slightly different depending on tires and other choices.
- Ground clearance depends on your choice of the Torsion Axle neutral angle. Can be higher or lower than the conventional leaf spring suspension design.
- Max capacity (for the trailer and for the conversion) is set in the trailer plans. These conversion plans work for 6000# and 7000# axles. Trailer capacity includes the trailer weight.
- True Torsion Axle Utility Trailer Design – Engineered for long life – even with full loading.
- While the plans do have the build steps, there is more info to help in the trailer and construction tips here on the website.

Notes for Success
* Trailer load capacity depends on all the parts and materials, as well as the craftsmanship in building. All Mechanical Elements trailers are engineered to perform as stated when built as defined with proper care in construction – including parts, material, construction techniques, weld integrity, assembly methods, and finishing. Capacity for this trailer also requires proper choices for parts such as the hitch, axle(s), wheels, tires, safety chain, decking, bolts, pins, etc. Please make sure component load capacities match or exceed the trailer total capacity. Do not exceed manufacturers limits.
For trouble-free trailer life, think care and safety. Please select fastening methods to handle how and where the trailer will operate – including vibration, proper fastener types, bolt grades, torques, and nut types (like lock nuts). Then, be smart about loading the trailer, load distribution, tire pressure, tire condition and the mechanics of towing. We want you safe to enjoy your trailer for a long time ahead. Always use proper safety and securing equipment when loading and towing a trailer.
