7′ x 14′ Dump Trailer Plans – 14,000 lbs

Size, Weight, and Performance Specifications are here for reference only.  Your choices with the options will affect these numbers.

• Tandem axles with leaf springs — use double eye or slipper style.
• 7′ x 14′ nominal box size, but the actual dump box is 86″ wide x 170″ long.
• Outside width at the fenders is 102 inches (at the legal limit of 8′ 6″).
• Fenders mount to the dump box for efficient support and vibration resistance.
• Overall length including the tongue is 20 feet, 2 inches.
• Total height as shown in the plans is just less than 5′ with straight axles.  (Drop axles are an option.  Dump-box side height is your choice.)
• Dump box tilt angle is 50 degrees.  The actual tilt angle may vary slightly with part placement tolerance.
• Uses the Dexter PH520 hydraulic scissor hoist – one size larger than typically specified for a trailer this size, providing better leverage, lift stability, and reserve capacity.
• Welded steel construction using standard materials.
• Rectangular tube main beam construction provides maximum strength and torsional stiffness to support the weight.
• Deck is 10 gauge steel.  (Make it thicker or thinner as you see fit.)
• Max trailer capacity is 14,000 lbs  –  (combined tandem axle rating)* which includes the trailer and everything in it.
• Trailer weight depends on options you choose.  Estimated base trailer weight starts at approximately 4900 lbs.  Options will increase the completed weight.
• Payload is total trailer capacity minus the actual completed trailer weight.  For this trailer, max payload is estimated at around 9000 lbs.  (4.5 tons).  Again, depending on the options you choose.
• Options are given for tie-down anchors.  A rail around the dump box provides attachment points for tarps and ratchet straps.  Set it at a height you like.
• Choose a front rail, or not.  Make it short or tall.
• Plans include a simple ramp design and engineering data so – if you want them – you can build the ramps at the capacity you want.  The engineering information tells you what length and material to use for the capacity you choose.  Ramps are optional.
• If you choose ramps, the plans also have the hook bar design so you can connect them to the trailer tail.  Also, a design for hanging the ramps on the side of the dump box for storage and transport.
• Plans include a tail support mechanism to use with the ramps, to prevent overstressing the trailer tail while loading equipment.
• A tongue mounted hydraulic power box holds a battery, pump, and oil reservoir to run the scissor hoist, and (optionally) the tongue jack.
• Battery can be charged via a solar panel, and/or through a charging connection from the tow vehicle.

* Full tandem axle capacity requires load sharing equalization.  This trailer is not designed for torsion axles or other independent suspension types.

During the design process we looked at many material sizes and configurations.  We settled on a design that will work hard, and be strong, while not limiting your load carrying capability.

Choose this 14,000 lb design when load volume, equipment hauling, or repeated heavy work matters more than compact size and single-axle maneuverability.  It is built strong, and optimized for improving leverage, lifting stability, and has some reserve capacity so it won’t struggle with a full load.
